Germany                                     European Castles Award

Sponsored by the BAVARIAN RADIO FRIENDS to promote amateur radio activity from castles or fortresses all over Europe. It is meant to support national castles award programs, which exist in several European countries, and to give a new challenge to all castle hunters.  Available to all radio amateurs and SWLs. There are no band, mode or date restrictions.

There are different awards for every hundred castles confirmed, 100, 200, 300, etc European castles (no upper limit). The applicant must have contacted castles from at least three different countries confirmed by QSL card. Each award has a picture of a different castle. You must begin at the 100 castle level before applying for any higher level. You may, start at a higher award level by applying for several awards in one application.

Non-European castle hunters can multiply their number of castles confirmed by four, so they will receive the same awards in steps of 25 castles, but the three countries rule also applies to them. No QSL cards must be submitted, but the applicant must possess the QSL cards. These QSL cards must clearly state the castle number of the respective national castle awards (like e.g. DCI, DFCF, BCA etc.). No detailed GCR list is needed. All that is required is a listing of the number of castles confirmed per country (e.g. Italy 123, France, 68, Belgium 23, Spain 15; etc.). Just count the QSLs, not write long lists. This list does not have to be verified by anybody. It is regarded as a matter of honor that participants do not cheat.

Castle activators may count each castle they have activated as confirmed.

The award fee is 5 Euro or 8 US-Dollars or 8 IRCs (only current valid ones please) for one award. If you apply, however, for more than one award in one application, the fee for the other awards is 2 Euro, or 3 US-Dollars or 3 IRCs per award. So if you apply for ECA 100, 200, 300 and 400 in one application, the fee  is 11 Euros or 17 Dollars or 17 IRCs for the four awards.

Apply to Hans-Jürgen Schmelzer DE3EAR, P.O. Box 1204, D-95634 Tirschenreuth, Germany.

USA - VHF                      Reverse VUCC Award (VUCC/r)

Sponsored by the Central States VHF Society. This program recognizes the "rover stations" who travel to rare grid areas and make contacts to benefit those working for the VUCC award and other VHF grid based programs. The goal is to make contacts FROM a set number of grids per band. The number of grids is the same as required by the ARRL award. Cards are required when submitting for the award.
Contacts made on 1 Jan 1993 or later will qualify. All contacts must be made operating AWAY from the home station location. The QSL cards, QSO listings and log extracts sent must include: both call signs, both grids, mode, date, time and band/frequency. This required information may be in any order on the listing or log extract. The cards, listings and extracts should also have the name of the licensee (person or club), mailing address, operating location if different from the mailing address. (Address, GPS coordinates, 6-digit grid, or Lat/Long) plus have a written signature of the licensee, trustee, operator, QSL manager or appropriate person confirming the specifics of the listed contacts. If a QSL card does not indicate the grid in which the rover was operating, it should be added in pencil.
At frequencies below 1.3GHz (and satellite), any number of stations in any number of grids may be worked. Above that frequency, target stations worked must all be within the 300 meter circle as specified in the VUCC rules. The location of the target stations must be indicated on their cards by at least the four digit grid, or preferably their lat/long or some other indication that they were inside the same circle. The rover, of course, is required to move around. Endorsements above the basic award may be submitted just as in VUCC.
All cards and forms, along with appropriate self-addressed packaging with enough postage for return of the cards plus a business sized envelope or larger if no folding is wanted, should be sent to: Bill Wageman K5MAT, CSVHFS VUCC/r Award, 7309 Avenida La Costa, NE, Albuquerque, NM. 87109-3900.
