ENGLAND                                        Royal Observer Corps Bunker Award

Contact stations operating within a radius of 500 meters from ROC Bunker / Facility locations in the United Kingdom.

History: The Royal Observer Corps has existed for many years, responsible for manning bunkers located all over the United Kingdom, as a part of the nuclear defence of the country. This was a secret part of the British Armed Forces, and as such few even knew of their existence. All of the sites have been decommissioned, but evidence of their presence is easy to see.

A body known as The United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation (U.K.W.M.O.) was set up in 1957 to warn the population of any impending air attack. The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) set up in WW2 as part of the Royal Air Force (RAF) to spot enemy aircraft, became the eyes and ears of the UKWMO in the cold war. In the nuclear era the job of the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was to report the positions of the bomb strikes and monitor resulting fallout areas and relay these back to Group Headquarters. Fallout warnings would be issued by the Group Headquarters and be relayed to the public via the HANDEL network. This data would be shared with the Regional Government Headquarters to enable them to control the post strike situation. The structure of the organisation was such that the destruction of an observer post or headquarters would have limited effect on the ability of the organisation to function.
From: http://www.ringbell.co.uk/ukwmo/Page113.htm

Certificates are currently available for making contact with stations operating at 10 and 25 different bunker locations and for working at least 10 Bunker Anniversary Stations.

The contacts must be made with bunkers which are described and numbered according to an official list of such facilities or within the particular locator square, and deemed safe with permission authorized by owners or Trusts of the existing properties. Newly listed bunkers will be validated by an official registration (see web site) of such location and the making of at least of 10 contacts by HF or 5 contacts via VHF or UHF with a single operating period.

All bands and modes will be valid for contacts made in this award program. However, contacts made via repeaters, satellites, IRLP, Echolink or mobile phone are not accepted.  The application should consist of your log extract containing: reference number, call sign, date, time, RST, frequency and mode. QSL cards must be made available to the custodian upon request. SWL OK. The award fee is £5 , 10 Euros, $US10 or 8 IRC’s. Applications are via an electronic form on their website, with Payment being accepted only via PAYPAL.

UARL Problems?

On 7/1/2011 11:35 AM, Paolo wrote:

Hello Ted,

On Jan. 2011 I sent an email to UZ1RR with a “preview application” for URDA.  He replied saying “Paolo, it’s all OK, just send me € 10 via registered mail”.

 On Feb. 9, 2011 I sent him € 10 via registered mail.
After 3 months I emailed him saying “Did you get my letter ??” He said NO, I didn’t.

So I went to my post office and asked them to investigate if the letter was handed over.

After a week I received official  replay saying “Ukrainian Postal Authority has confirmed that the letter was delivered on Feb. 19”.

Again I emailed UZ1RR and attached copy of the letter I received. But NO reply from him. Later on, I emailed him again, but still no reply.

So I think UZ1RR is just a money collector. Hams should beware of him.
