CANADA                                             The VIMY Ridge Award

The Vimy Ridge, a WWI battle site, is an escarpment 7 km in length and rising 60 m. above the adjacent Douai Plains in the north east corner of France. This was part of the "Western Front", the main theater of battle in WWI which stretched from the North Sea to the Swiss border at the south end. Vimy Ridge, despite its small size, was of huge strategic importance. It commanded a great field of fire and blocked advances up the adjacent broad valleys towards important mining and industrial sites visible from the ridge. Occupied by German forces after 1914, attempts by the French and British forces to take the Ridge had repeatedly failed with casualties numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

In April of 1917, four Canadian Divisions, fighting as a unified force, using new tactics derived from the recent Battle of the Somme, captured the main part of the Ridge on the first day of combat and completely occupied the entire ground in four days. Vimy Ridge remained in Allied hands for the rest of the war and served as the base for the wireless operations of the Canadian Corps of Signals. The Vimy success was welcome news to war-weary Canada and it stirred a new sense of nationhood that some historians describe as the "moment when Canada leapt in spirit from colony to nation"

Portable operations are scheduled as follows:
January 1 to March 30, 2017 (one week for each Province and Territory)
The suffix for province/territory will be shown as /VE1, /VE2, etc.

- from 00:00 UTC on May, 1st till 23:59 UTC on May, 10th.

Types of modes:
The contacts made by the following 15 digital modes are accepted: CONTESTIA, DOMINO, HELL, JT65, JT9, MFSK, MT63, OLIVIA, PSK, ROS, RTTY, SIM-PSK, SSTV, THOR, THROB.
Bands and recommended frequencies (this is a large table available on their web site, address shown at bottom of this article.) Radio contacts set on nine bands are counted: 160, 80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters.

Some of the MANY digital modes that are recognized and may be encountered are as follows:
(See the actual website below to see where activity is likely to be found. )

MT63-500 OLIVIA8/250

General rules:  Duplicate radio contacts (SWL) can be conducted by different digital modes as on one band as well as on other bands. Spots in the Web cluster are welcomed. Contacts may be held by appointment (sked). We recommend schedules to use narrow-band protocols. Other digital contests may take place during Days of Activity, therefore we ask participants not to occupy for ordinary QSO those frequencies where other contesters are active. The radio contacts conducted in digital contests during Digital Activity Days are also counted for the participants.

For the contacts in the seldom-used digital modes the following schedule is suggested for the 10 days of January and May activity. This calendar is advisory in nature.
01.01 and 01.05.2016 - HELL and SSTV
02.01 and 02.05.2016 - MFSK
03.01 and 03.05.2016 - OLIVIA
04.01 and 04.05.2016 - MT63

08.01 and 08.05.2016 - CONTESTIA
09.01 and 09.05.2016 - THROB
10.01 and 10.05.2016 - DOMINO

The calendar recommendations are not required for other, the more popular types of Digi modes: RTTY, PSK, JT65.

Recommended software: We recommend to use a multi-mode programs, such as MultiPSK, MixW, Flgidi and others, as well as programs for some Digi modes. Many programs can bo downloaded on the club website in the "Archive of programs for radio digital modes".

UKRAINE                                       31st Anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster EO31U

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident.      It occurred on 26 April 1986 in the No.4 light water graphite moderated reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, in what was then part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union (USSR).

During the accident, blast effects caused 2 deaths within the facility and later, 29 firemen and employees died in the days-to-months afterward from acute radiation syndrome, with the potential for long-term cancers still being investigated. The remains of the No.4 reactor building were enclosed in a large sarcophagus (radiation shield) by December 1986, at a time when what was left of the reactor was entering the cold shut-down phase; the enclosure was built quickly as occupational safety for the crews of the other undamaged reactors at the power station, with No.3 continuing to produce electricity into 2000.

Netherlands                                    Dutch National Windmill and Waterpumpstation weekend

On Saturday and Sunday, 13th/14th May 2017 the Netherlands will be holding a National Windmill and Pumping Station weekend during which many windmills and pumping stations will be open to the public to view. Guides will be in attendance to explain the operation of the machinery and to answer questions.

For many years, in the U.K., the events of this weekend have been shared with amateur radio stations and became known as the ‘Mills on the Air’ weekend. In 2009 Jelle (PD5JFK) and Bernard (PB7Z) decided to set up for the first time their own special radio station to contact mills in Holland and elsewhere in Europe and so advertise the opening of Windmills and Pumping Stations. This proved to be so popular with millers and volunteers alike that they were encouraged to repeat this promotion each year and this year is the 9th year.

This event has proved to be an excellent way to advertise the hobby of amateur radio to the many members of the public who visit the mills and pumping stations. It is not generally realised how distant our amateur radio communications can travel and with experts on hand to explain the operations as they are taking place within the mill.

A list of mills which have promised activity for the event (not only from Holland, but from other European countries as well) is shown on their web site. The sponsor asks that if your windmill is not yet listed, that you should contact them at nationalemolendag@gmail.com .

Award Requirements:
a) Six different windmills or pumping stations or,
b) Six QSO’s with windmills or pumping stations on different Bands/Modes.

The award is available only as a pdf document. Each year they use a classic image of windmills of the past history of Holland.
SWL OK. A special version of the award will be sent to them. They will require the log to be sent by email showing the QSO data of both stations. The Award will be free and sent via email.
