ITALY DIPLOMA TORRI SARACENE (DTS)
(SARACEN TOWER AWARD)
(This is a variation of the Castle awards. The structures come in an array of conditions, some like a jumbled pile of rocks all the way to looking like a little castle. I saw many examples of them while visiting Southern Italy.)
One of the early groups of settlers who settled in Italy was the Saracens. They were great builders of stone watch-towers to keep track of their troublesome neighbors and built these structures all up and down the rugged coasts of Italy. They must have done a great job, since many, many such towers survived the centuries and their towers can be seen with great frequency on the coasts.
Basically, a series of awards are available for making contacts with portable/mobile stations who are located close by, but not necessarily in the towers. These activators may earn the award, but all details the rules of the activators is not covered by this text.
RULES:
1. The activation of the tower references must be carried out near the building and in any case within 500 meters from the external perimeter of the building. Any fixed stations must produce appropriate documentation to demonstrate compliance with the expected distance.
2. Each operation conducting the activation of a reference will be considered valid if at least 60 QSOs have been made at the first activation. (This does not apply to subsequent activations.)
3. All the Bands assigned to the Radio Amateur Service in Italy are valid. All emission modes are valid.
4. Activations are also valid if at the same time activations of castles, islands, lighthouses, lakes, etc., provided that the reference of the Torri Saracene Diploma during the activation is also mentioned.
5. For the activation of a reference already activated, the activators need only 50 QSO’s will make a valid operation..
6.. The list of references is published on http://arsitalia.it/diploma-torrisaracene/referenze/ and the sponsors indicate that this data is neither complete nor exhaustive.
7. New references may be added as historical studies and excavations are conducted.
The decision regarding acceptance or rejection of the request lies with the Award Manager who is the arbitrator of such list.
8. QSLs for confirmation of QSO are not necessary, electronic cross checking identifying the presence of the QSO in the activator log.
9. These rules are also to SWL stations.
Rules for Diplomas:
10. There are three categories of Diploma Torri Saracene: Bronze, Silver and Gold .
11. For the Hunters , the diplomas will be issued on request at the achievement levels of 30, 50, 75 connected Towers. The Diplomas are free and are sent by e-mail in PDF format, ready to be printed, directly by the applicant.
11. If the applicant does not use e-mail, it is possible to print and send the Diploma to their home by expressly requesting the Manager by writing to the email: award@arsitalia.it , attaching the sum of 10 Euro or 14 Dollars USA to cover expenses on the following postal cc: 1025747351 or IBAN: IT98E0760116200001025747351 in the Amateur Radio Society. You can also use the payment via pay pal and making a donation. (IRCs or other currencies are not accepted).
12. To obtain the Hunter Diploma the applicant, who resides in a foreign country belonging to the EU or in the countries bordering the Mediterranean, must have contacted a minimum of 10 references.
